AT&T Prepaid and Cricket Wireless appear to be leaving Best Buy stores. Over the last several weeks, analysts from the firm Wave7 Research noticed inventory of both brands dwindling in stores across several states. Signage advertising each brand has been also taken down. Online checks of several zip codes also show little to no inventory available at local Best Buys for either Cricket or AT&T prepaid phones. SIM cards for each brand may remain in stores moving forward alongside prepaid SIM kits from several other brands that are carried there.

And now with AT&T Prepaid and Cricket leaving Best Buy, the total number of prepaid brands withdrawn from the store since 2019 has increased to 5. Thus far, Best Buy has not replaced the losses with any other wireless brands. Wave7 Research's data indicates that roughly 20% of Best Buy stores have shifted focus towards the sale of unlocked phones. That could be a reason why the prepaid brands that have left the store haven't been replaced, or they're just don't sell enough, in general, to warrant replacing.

For an overly simplistic example, if the carrier only uses band X and the phone only uses band Y, the phone isn't going to work with that carrier (you'd still be able to use it over Wi-Fi, of course). Depending on the technology, some unlocked phones you can buy will only work with AT&T and T-Mobile in the US. Others will work with all of the Big Four and their prepaid branches -- for example Boost and Virgin Mobile for Sprint, Cricket Wireless for AT&T, and MetroPCS for T-Mobile.

There are a bunch of flip phones kicking around the cell phone aisle at Walgreens and Walmart from carrier brands like Tracfone and Net10. We don't review them, but some appear to be older, decent-quality LG models. If your budget is tight, try one of those. Avoid phones where the carrier appears to be the phone maker; those are typically rebadged phones from low-rent manufacturers.

Generally speaking, you'll find cell phone deals coming in two forms - first as an outright sale on an unlocked device, and secondly as part of a carrier-plan tie-in. The latter can be a bit tricky, involving new cell phone plans and also trade-ins on old devices, but the savings can be absolutely huge if you're eligible. We've also included a third alternative option - cell phone deals from prepaid carriers. These smaller carriers don't tend to offer huge savings on a device, but you'll generally be scoring a much cheaper cell phone plan so it's worth considering the switch for sure.

Which type of cell phone deal should you go for Well, that will depend on your personal needs. If you're looking for the latest flagship device and an unlimited plan to pair it up with then you'll be well served by Verizon or AT&T's latest promotions. If you're looking for maximum flexibility or long-term savings, then it's generally better to consider either buying a device unlocked and then going with a prepaid carrier, or buying a prepaid device directly from that carrier.

If you're on more of a budget you may want to consider the older (but still great) iPhone 12, which is now a full $200 cheaper upfront versus launch.
